About me

I am a molecular biologist and microalgal physiologist with a long-standing interest in how microalgae sense, assimilate, and respond to nutrients. My research has mainly focused on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model organism to study nitrogen metabolism, molybdenum homeostasis, nutrient signaling, and stress responses.

My scientific career began with the study of nutrient transport and nitrate signaling in photosynthetic organisms. During my Ph.D. and subsequent postdoctoral research in Germany, I contributed to the characterization of key metabolic pathways related to nitrogen and molybdenum metabolism, gaining broad experience in algal physiology, molecular biology, and enzymology.

After returning to Spain, I joined the University of Córdoba, where I established an independent research line focused on the molecular and physiological regulation of nutrient metabolism in microalgae. Over the years, my work has evolved towards a broader interest in how microalgae interact with their environment and with other microorganisms.

A major focus of my current research is the study of microalgae–bacteria interactions. In particular, my group investigates how Chlamydomonas exchanges metabolites with beneficial bacteria and how these interactions can influence growth, nitrogen use, stress tolerance, and mutualistic relationships. This research connects fundamental biology with potential applications in biotechnology, bioremediation, sustainable agriculture, and circular bioeconomy.

I have participated in and led several competitive research projects, built national and international collaborations, and trained undergraduate, Master’s, and Ph.D. students. I am especially interested in combining molecular biology, physiology, genomics, and microbial ecology to better understand the role of microalgae in natural and applied systems.

Beyond research, I am committed to teaching, mentoring, and scientific outreach. I believe that microalgae offer an excellent model to explore fundamental biological questions while also providing sustainable solutions to current environmental challenges.

My scientific path has moved from nutrient transport and nitrogen signaling to a broader view of microalgal metabolism and microbe–microalgae interactions.
